    Light and Location

    • Sunlight: Plant in partial or full shade. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can bleach or scorch the dark green leaves.
    • Wind: Protect the shrub from cold, drying winter winds to prevent leaf damage.
    • Containers: 'Rubella' grows very well in pots, making it a great choice for patios or gardens with alkaline soil where you can use specialized ericaceous compost.

    Soil and Watering

    • Soil Type: Prefers moist, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. It thrives best in acidic to neutral conditions (pH 5.5–7.0). If your garden soil is chalky or alkaline, grow it in a container.
    • Watering: Water newly planted shrubs regularly during their first 12 to 18 months to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but it needs regular watering during dry spells. Potted plants must never dry out completely.
    • Mulching: Apply an annual spring mulch of leaf mold, garden compost, or bark chips over the root area to lock in moisture and keep roots cool. Keep the mulch slightly away from the actual stem to avoid rot.

    Feeding and Pruning

    • Feeding: Feed container-grown plants or those in poor soil with a slow-release ericaceous (acid-loving) fertilizer in early spring.
    • Pruning: Regular pruning is not necessary. You can lightly trim or shape the plant immediately after flowering in the spring if an errant stem spoils its compact shape. Note that 'Rubella' is a male variety, meaning it produces gorgeous red flower buds through autumn and winter and fragrant white spring flowers, but it does not produce berries.
