Planting and Spacing

• Timing: Plant from February to April once the soil is workable in spring, or alternatively in autumn in milder areas.
• Location: Choose a bright, open position with full sun.
• Soil: Prepare light, fertile soil mixed with well-rotted garden compost. Avoid fresh manure, which causes poor bulb formation.
• Spacing: Space sets about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart, with rows roughly 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart.
• Depth: Gently push each set into the soil so the pointy tip just shows at the surface. Protect newly planted rows with netting if birds tend to pull them up.

Care and Maintenance

• Watering: Provide regular water during dry spells while the plants are actively growing. Reduce watering as summer approaches and the bulbs start to mature.
• Weeding: Keep the bed clear of weeds by hand weeding carefully around the shallow root systems.
• Flowers: Snip off any flower spikes (scapes) immediately if they appear to keep the plant's energy focused on bulb growth.
