When and Where to Plant

• Timing: Plant cloves from autumn to early winter (October to January) so the cold weather helps set strong roots.
• Location: Choose a spot that gets full sun for 6 to 8 hours a day.
• Soil: Use loose, rich, and free-draining soil mixed with homemade compost or rotted manure.

How to Plant the Cloves

• Separate: Break a healthy garlic bulb apart into individual cloves, keeping their papery skins intact.
• Select: Choose only the largest cloves to grow the biggest bulbs.
• Depth and Spacing: Push each clove about 2 to 3 inches (5 cm) deep into the soil.
• Orientation: Make sure the pointy end faces up and the flat, root end faces down.
• Distance: Space cloves 6 inches (15 cm) apart, with about 12 inches (30 cm) between rows.

Care and Maintenance

• Watering: Water the soil during long dry spells but keep it moist rather than waterlogged.
• Weeding: Keep the area clear of weeds so the garlic does not have to fight for nutrients.
• Scapes: Snip off any tall flower stalks (scapes) that appear in spring, so the plant puts all its energy into the bulb
